Word Rebel is a 501(c)(3) early childhood literacy nonprofit serving New York City. Our programs empower parents to teach children 1,100 words before preschool. Every tax-deductible donation is used to fund programming that directly benefits at-risk children under five years old.
Why 1,100 words?
The most accurate predictor of whether or not a child will graduate from high school is the number of words they know when they start preschool. This is true regardless of household income, parent education level, access to quality schools or environmental factors. No school-age intervention has ever been able to successfully close the preschool word gap, which only grows worse as students grow older. What happens when every child learns 1,100 words by preschool? We close the preschool readiness gap. Every child masters the early literacy skills that determine K-12 reading ability. All children start school with equal preparation and an equal chance to succeed. Household income does not define a child’s longterm opportunities. Academic equality and meritocracy become a reality. The achievement gap is closed before it starts.
